[PACS client feature] RadiAnt discards study images

Hi there,

I am running version 2.2.9 and have been recently testing the new flashy RadiAnt PACS/DICOM client feature. However I was somehow puzzled since most of the studies requested were not fully received.

After some research I found out what reason may that be. I believe that once the images are ready to be delivered to RadiAnt, the PACS/DICOM server I use is sending different study series in new associations. That is, establishes/opens an association, sents DIMSE messages (C-STORE requests) for each image to be sent and releases the association to start over again.

RadiAnt though, once the first DICOM Association Release is received, 'assumes' that the study is complete and transaction terminated and don't accept/expect any additional Associations to be initiated as part of the storage process.

Not sure if someone else had similar issues or how feasible would that be to fix. But would be really great if you could make the RadiAnt DICOM storage service more flexible in terms of remote data acceptance as it is an outstanding application for imaging review.

DICOM standard states (ps3.4, section B.4) the following:

"An SCP of the Storage SOP Classes may not attach any significance to the particular association or associations over which C-STORE operations are requested, nor the order in which C-STORE operations occur within an association. No constraints are placed on the operations an SCU may perform during any particular association, other than those defined during association negotiation. An SCP may not expect an SCU to perform C-STORE operations in a particular order."

Thanks and good job,
Jordi

Hi Jordi,

Thank you for your kind words about our RadiAnt.
We analyzed the issue you mentioned and are almost completely sure about the reason of it.
RadiAnt can accept incoming instances on many C-STORE associations, no problem with that. However, current implementation relies on the C-MOVE association to tell whether the request is finished. This is what the DICOM standard states - C-MOVE can be released only after all C-STORE requests are finished. However, it seems that some of the DICOM server implementations don't respect this rule and I'm sure that your server is one of those.
We'll start working on a workaround immediately as we would like to please everyone, even with badly behaving servers ;-)

Greetings,
Maciej
